Along the coast of East Sussex are the lovely South Downs, a range of chalk hills. In the South East are a line of marshes near Rye. To the north is the Weald, running from Uckfield to Rye, these hills are sand caped with clay and are and heavily wooded. The major centres of population are the coastal towns of Brighton, Hove, Newhaven, Seaford, Eastbourne, Bexhill, Hastings and Rye. On the other side of the Downs lie Lewes, Polgate and Uckfield, and further inland Crowborough, Mayfield, Battle and Wadhurst are the only major towns on the Weald.

In East Sussex major roads generally go around the South Downs and the Weald and along the coast. The major routes areA27 which links Brighton, Hove and Lewes to Eastbourne. The A22 links Eastbourne to Uckfield and Crowborough. The A26 from Lewes to Uckfield and Crowborough. The coast road (A259) runs from Rye in the east through Hastings and Bexhill, Eastbourne and Newhaven to Brighton in the west and goes through all the coastal towns. There is a network of small lanes that link the villages to the major routes and driving around East Sussex is the best way to see the lovely countryside and landscape.
